The Ex Factor

Checking his watch frantically as he ran, Curt Ramsey entered the Amtrak train station panting loudly as he flung the door open. Dressed in a full suit and tie, Kurt looked very professional, especially for a new college sophomore. Yet this type of dress had been common for Curt since he was 17 years old, when his life focus turned to business.

“Hello,” Curt said as he slid in front of the ticket window, “I’m Curtis Ramsey; I have a reserved seat on the 12:40 train to Hampstead, Pennsylvania.”

The woman behind the glass without speaking typed rapidly on her keyboard and within moments handed Curt a ticket through the opening.

“Thank you!” he said turning and running to the gate, “Have a wonderful day!” he added.

Flying up the stairs Curt heard his train number being called over the loudspeaker, it was beginning to board.

“Whew,” Curt said as he reached the track, “just in time.” He said with a laugh.

Curt threw his duffle bag onto the racks above an open seat and flopped down onto the cushioned surface and exhaled loudly as the train began to pull away. Loosening his tie, Curt yet again checked his watch as he pulled out his Blackberry phone.

Only 20 years old, Curt looked like a Wall Street broker, fresh from the floor. Truth be told Curt had just come from an interview where he was applying for a highly prestigious internship, just another stepping stone on his way to greatness within his career.

Now, with his Ivy League school and the internship behind him, Curt was heading back to his small hometown in mid-western Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving. While checking his phone he had received many text messages from old High School friends, who were also home for the holiday, friends who were excited to finally see him since their college adventures had begun.

Curt clicked the tiny buttons rapidly, replying to each message, genuinely excited to finally get a much deserved break. He looked up to the buildings towering thousands of feet high, and watched as each of them begun to shake uncontrollably.

The ominous sounds became quicker now, their noise now pounding down on top of Curt. He turned his attention to the direction of the powerful booming, his heart beating swiftly. Next thing he knew, he saw a distant building topple to the ground, a massive crash echoing through the city. The debris scattered across the empty street, shards of glass and twisted steel smashing to the pavement.

Knowing that danger was approach, Curt quickly turned and began pumping his legs, running as fast as he possibly could, trying to create distant between himself and whatever lay behind the giant buildings.

The booming started up again just as quickly as Curt had begun to move, its crashing sound becoming more rapid, gaining on Curt as he sprinted ahead. Suddenly as if the world had fallen out from underneath him, Curt began soaring rapidly into the air, the tops of the buildings flying past his vision. An all too familiar laugh began to thunder around him as his flight abruptly stopped, a soft, cushion like surface now held his body afloat. Slowly Curt opened his eyes, his hands and knees both digging into the plushy base.

Directly in front of him hung a giant eyeball, its golden brown lids flicking slightly every few seconds, staring at Curt intently. Curt yet again checked his watch, a compulsion that he had developed over the years. He saw that he had been asleep for nearly an hour, leaving 3 long hours left in his train journey.

As he sat, his earphones plugged into his ears, his iPod churning out music, Curt thought about the nightmare that transpired only moments before. The more he thought about the dream the more he realized how nervous he was to see Shauna again. He assumed that this was his mind’s way of bringing this issue to the forefront of his psyche.
